Social Concerns Ministries

The New Ark UCC is a socially conscious community with deep interest in and commitments to local, national, and global ministries. The Social Concerns Committee is the group that oversees these interests, encouraging active participation in various ministries as well as coordinating special offerings for the wider church and local community.
As a Just Peace and Open and Affirming church, the New Ark UCC is concerned about many of the issues troubling our world today. Homelessness and hunger are two problems that have especially engaged this congregation's energy and talents in finding solutions. The New Ark United Housing Ministry (NAUHM) began as an idea in the Social Concerns Committee and grew to be a non-profit housing organization, owning and operating a house for families in transition in the local community. In addition, the congregation provides work groups, meals and financial support for local Habitat for Humanity projects. We also lend physical and monetary support to Meeting Ground, a transitional housing facility in Maryland.

The New Ark UCC collects food regularly for distribution to local food pantries. Our members volunteer monthly to provide a hot meal for those in need at Hope Dining Room. Our Youth Group annually participates in the Crop Walk to raise money for hunger projects.

The Social Concerns Committee seeks to encourage new ideas and projects to address areas of need. The New Ark Family Center is a fairly new mission project designed to address some of the youth and family needs of the Newark community. After its successful beginning, it is now a part of the NAUHM and may partner with the University of Delaware in upcoming projects. Currently the committee is starting a new project that focuses on helping the homeless who regularly seek help from the church on a walk-in basis.

The Social Concerns Committee welcomes all ideas and talents in recognizing needs and finding ways to help.
